The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is a comprehensive consumer protection law that took effect Jan. 1, 2020. Many other states are introducing similar legislation, and proposals at the Federal level are being considered as well.
The definition of personal information is very broad under the CCPA law, which also introduces new privacy rights for Californians, like the right to know what personal information a business has collected about them, details about how the data will be used, and the right to request that a business delete information.
The CCPA applies to range of businesses that handle Californians’ personal information, so CCPA compliance means most businesses have had to update disclosures in their privacy notices, establish processes for responding to consumer rights requests, observe restrictions on data monetization practices and revisit relationships with vendors that handle personal information on their behalf.
