PwC’s Annual Corporate Directors Survey, set to release on October 8th, reveals a conundrum of collegiality in an increasingly distrustful environment. In a survey of more than 800 U.S. board directors, 43 percent revealed they have difficulty voicing a dissenting view in the boardroom. With corporate boards being tasked with ensuring the company is on the right track, this concern may be stifling the honest debate that is integral for this group. The survey also delved into a sudden drop in director sentiment on board diversity and ESG issues, among other hot button topics. Key findings include:
- Only 17 percent of directors support laws that mandate diversity on boards
- 63 percent of directors said investors are devoting too much attention to board gender diversity
- 58 percent of directors felt investors were focusing too much on environmental and sustainability issues
- 75 percent of directors responded that investors are giving the right amount of attention to long-term stock performance
